LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
The UNLV track & field team opened up its 2012 outdoor season this weekend with its own UNLV Track Classic, which was held at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field. UNLV claimed seven first-place showings at the two-day meet. In all, the Rebels had 40 top-eight finishes in a total of 19 events.
Amanda Bingson, Ria Daniels and Myshauna Alexander claimed the top spots in three of the field events. Bingson tossed the hammer 208-7 (63.59m). Daniels leapt a distance of 37-0.50 (11.29m) in the triple jump. Alexander threw the javelin 149-7 (45.59).
Not only did Alexander perform well in the javelin, but she also finished in sixth or better in three other events. She was fourth in the shot put (42-1.25/12.83m), fifth in the discus (141-8/43.17m) and sixth in the hammer (138-7/42.24m).
Both Bingson and Daniels placed in another event, as well. Bingson was seventh in the discus (129-2/39.38m), while Daniels was sixth in the long jump (17-7.00/5.36).
There were five Rebels that set personal bests since their earlier competitions at UNLV. Ashley Henry (17-10.25/5.44m) and Olivia Hudson (17-9.75/5.43m) both set new marks in the long jump. Paige Holly ran a time of 1:00.53 in the 400m., while Laura Affeld topped her previous best in the 400m hurdles with today's effort of 1:02.32. Myra Dean one-upped herself in the high jump with a measurement of 5-5.00 (1.65m).
The team is back in action in San Diego on March 16-17, at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational.
