SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UNLV women's track and field team finished its first outdoor meet this Saturday, competing in the 38th annual Aztec Classic, hosted by San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Four athletes finished in the top 10 for the Rebels, led by two such finishes by Olivia Raya in the throwing events as she took fourth in the discus with a toss of 138'-0.00" and ninth in the shot put with a mark of 38'-3.25". Her teammate and fellow thrower Monique Humphries came in eighth in the shot put with a heave of 38'-3.50".
On the track UNLV had a pair earn top-10 recognition, with Katie Hughes coming in fifth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 19:24.51 and Ashley Patin placing eighth in the 400 meters in 59.63. It was the second-consecutive 5,000 meter race for Hughes, who won the event yesterday in the first running of the event at the two-day event.
This was the first meet of the outdoor season for head coach Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson's squad, which finished eighth in the Mountain West Conference indoor championships three weeks ago. Team scores were not kept at the Aztec Classic.
The Rebels will be back in action next weekend at the ASU Invite, an all-day meet held in Tempe, Ariz., on March 25.
