March 19, 2011
TEMPE, Ariz. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebel track and field team had a great showing in the hammer throw Friday afternoon at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted at Sun Angel Stadium. UNLV claimed five of the top seven spots, which included Amanda Bingson's program-record throw of 224-8 (68.47m) to top all throwers.
Bingson's toss was almost five feet further than her previous best that was accomplished just two weeks ago at the Rebels' own UNLV Track Classic with a throw of 219-2 (66.81m).
"Coach Greg Watson is doing a fabulous job with our throwers," said track head coach Yvonne Scott. "One of our goals is to be a dominant force in that event and they are definitely taking care of business."
Chelsea Cassulo and Danielle Rios placed third and fourth, respectively, with throws of 182-09 (55.71m) and 176-03 (53.72m). LaShante Ellison (168-2/51.25m) placed sixth, while Brittany Harvey (159-5.00 (48.60m) was seventh.
The Invitational continues Saturday with the first events starting at 10:00 am.
