IRVINE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field team competed in five events on the first day of the 20th Annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium. The Rebels had six student-athletes finish in the top six of four different events. A trio of long jumpers led the way with a first-, second- and fourth-place showing Friday.
Krystal Wharton won the long jump with a distance of 19-9.75 (6.04m). Wharton was closely followed by Amber Sanford, who jumped 19-7.50 (5.98m) for second. Akia Armstrong took fourth behind a leap of 19-3.25 (5.87m). All three measurements were personal bests.
Laura Affeld took second in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 11:09.21.
"It was great seeing this team step up the way they did today," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "They are learning how to work together as a team to make a difference and that every one of their performances counts. This is important as we go into the Mountain West Outdoor Championships. We look forward to some more improvements tomorrow."
Saturday's action kicks off at high noon, both on the track and in the field. The former is started with the women's 4x100m relay, while the latter opens up with the men's shot put.
In all, UNLV has at least one entrant in four field and nine track events Saturday.
