AUSTIN (UNLVRebels.com) - One day after running a personal-best time in the first round of the 800m at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Championship, Brett Zorich one-upped herself with an even better mark in the quarterfinals on Friday evening. Zorich shaved more than two seconds off yesterday's time with a 2:05.39 showing in the 800m, which earned her a qualifying spot in the national meet slated for June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Unfortunately for the UNLV track & field team, Zorich was the only competitor from those that participated on Friday to advance to Des Moines. The four other student-athletes that competed finished outside the qualifying parameters at the meet held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
Blok advanced to the quarterfinal in the 100m after her showing in Thursday's first round, but finished 21st overall with a time of 11.63.
Two other Rebels that ran in their respective quarterfinals were Christine Lowe and Kelsey Williamson. The former ran the 15th-fastest time (58.27) in the 400m hurdles, while the latter was 17th in the 800m (2:08.08).
UNLV will have its 4x400m relay team (Blok, Lowe, Williamson and Zorich) and two hammer throwers (Amanda Bingson and Danielle Rios) in action in the third and final day of the meet in Austin. The relay squad and Bingson both finished first overall at the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships two weeks ago.
