May 26, 2017
AUSTIN, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track & field's Kaysee Pilgrim and Destiny Smith-Barnett had strong showings on the second day of the 2017 NCAA Outdoor West Preliminary Championships at the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Both Rebels advanced in their respective events to the NCAA's national meet, as Pilgrim did so in the high jump and Smith-Barnett in the 100m.
"Track meets always come with ups and downs, but we are super proud of the athletes and that we were able to get two to Eugene today," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "We still have one more day of competition so we hope to get a few more in."
The West Preliminary is one of two qualifiers the NCAA is hosting before its Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 7-10. The East Preliminary will run concurrently - with the West - in Lexington, Kentucky, at the University of Kentucky. The top 12 student-athletes from each event will move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Pilgrim, who is ranked first in the country in the high jump, finished tied for the top spot at the prelims with a measurement of 5-10.5 (1.79m). Smith-Barnett, who finished sixth in the first round of the sprint on Thursday, posted a ninth-place showing in the quarterfinals with a time of 11.24.
The Scarlet & Gray got the day started properly with Taylor Pegram in the first round of the 100m hurdles. Pegram finished second in her heat (fourth) with a time of 13.26-w - the 11th best - to automatically advance to Saturday's quarterfinals at 7:05 p.m. CT (5:05 p.m. PT).
Smith-Barnett advanced to Saturday's 200m quarterfinals thanks to her second-place finish (23.33) in the second heat of the 200m prelims. Drea Austin also ran in the second heat and, she too, will move on to Saturday's quarters, which will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the 100m hurdles, after she claimed the sixth and final qualifying spot with a time of 23.52. Smith-Barnett sits 18th overall while Austin is 24th.
Jaela Williams also competed Friday in the 100m hurdles and posted a time of 14.41-w.
The 4x100m relay team (sixth: 43.93) of Smith-Barnett, Austin, Kaysha Love and Pegram will have a go Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT (4:00 p.m. PT). The 4x400m relay squad, which is ranked 23rd (3:38.89), will close out the track portion of the day and be comprised of Mandy Chitwood, Austin, Nylia Hudspeth and Micayla Coquia (Las Vegas/Legacy HS).
