Relay Team, Smith-Barnett End Day Two At NCAA Championships|
June 8, 2017
EUGENE, Oregon (UNLVRebels.com) - The No. 25 UNLV track & field team's 4x100m relay team and Destiny Smith-Barnett's seasons came to an end Thursday at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which are being held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. The Rebels, however, have one more student-athlete left to compete, as Kaysee Pilgrim will participate in the high jump Saturday.
"Even though they didn't advance today, I am still very proud of how these young women competed this season," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "They have worked hard to be here, and they now believe that they belong, which is half the battle. These sprinters will all return next year with a chip on their shoulders, and they will be ready to prove they are one of the best in the country."
The 4x100m relay comprised of Destiny Smith-Barnett, Kaysha Love, Taylor Pegram and Drea Austin posted a time of 44.71 to finish 15th overall - an improvement of eight spots from its post-NCAA West Preliminary finish.
Smith-Barnett pulled double duty, as she registered a 15th-place finish in the 100m with a time of 11.45. Pilgrim, a Phoenix native, qualified for the national championships after she tied for the top mark at the West Preliminary with a height of 5-10.5 (1.79m) in the high jump. She sits atop the NCAA's standings with a measurement of 6-2.75 (1.90m) that not only broke her own UNLV record, but also two of the Mountain West's.
The ESPN family of networks will continue broadcasting the meet with Friday's (12:30 to 3:00 on ESPN3 and 5:30 to 8:00 on ESPN) and Saturday's (11:30 to 2:30 on ESPN3 and 3:30 to 6:00 on ESPN) action. Viewers can also find the televised events on the WatchESPN app.
