Dec. 4, 2009
LAS VEGAS - Team Gray beat Team Scarlet during the UNLV track and field intrasquad meet, which was held at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field on a chilly but sunny Friday afternoon.
Gray was paced by senior sprinter Chauncey David-Jacobs, who won both the 150 and 300 meter races. She was followed by teammate Emily Blok, who was second in both events, and the duo helped Gray rack up 138 team points for a seven-point victory over Scarlet, which had 131. Shahnel Woodley added a win in the 60 meters for Gray as well.
Sophomore thrower Amanda Bingson carried team Scarlet, winning all three throwing events on the afternoon. Candise Maxwell won the 60-meter hurdles while Sarah Muniz and Bailey Kuestermeyer finished first and second respectively in the 1,200 meters.
"It was really a fun day for us to get together as a team and compete for the first time before the indoor season," UNLV head coach Yvonne Scott said. "We can see what we need to do as we get closer to our competitive season."
This will be the third season for the Rebels under Scott, and today's meet was one of the final team activities before the winter break. UNLV will compete in up to four regular-season indoor meets and the MWC Indoor Championships and is then slated to run in up to nine outdoor meets followed by the MWC Outdoor Championships.
The Rebels open their indoor season at the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 16 and the league championships are being hosted by New Mexico and begin on Feb. 26 and the NCAA Indoor Championships are March 12-13 at Fayetteville, Ark. UNLV kicks off its outdoor season with the UNLV Track Classic on March 6, the only home meet of the season for the Rebels, and the 2010 MWC Outdoor Championships are being hosted by New Mexico as well and will be held May 12-15 in Albuquerque, N.M.
