UNLV Opens Indoor Track Season at Boise State
Jan. 16, 2003
LAS VEGAS - Twelve members of the UNLV women's track and field team will open the 2003 indoor season this weekend at the Bandanna Team Invitational hosted by Boise State University on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Boise, Idaho.
There, the Rebels will dual Boise State, intrastate rival Nevada, Reno, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and running events at 10 a.m.
Last season, the Rebels placed fourth at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships behind four first-place finishes turned in by former Rebel and five-time All-American Michele Davis (1998-2002) and the 4x400 relay team comprised of Davis and top returners Chantel Yates (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Christine Spence (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Nickeisha Charles (Arima, Trinidad).
First-year UNLV coach Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson looks for the team's returning veterans to build on last year's success and to lead the younger members on the squad, who will be competing in their first collegiate meet of their careers. She also hopes to see the Rebels achieve personal best times and marks in their respective events.
"We are going to put our best foot forward this weekend taking our throwers, jumpers and distance runners to the meet," Ferrell-Edmonson said. "The competition should give us a good boost for the indoor season, which will then be used as a tune-up for the outdoor season in March."
Results will be posted at www.broncosports.com at the completion of the meet.
