Rebels Open Up Season With Trip To Flagstaff
Jan. 16, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program kicks off its 2014 indoor season Friday at the Lumberjack Tam Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz. A total of nine squads will compete in the meet that will take place at the Walkup Skydome on the campus of Northern Arizona University. Besides UNLV and NAU, seven other teams - Arizona, Arizona State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Fullerton, Grand Canyon, Northwestern State and UC Riverside - will also attend the one-day competition that begins at 4:00 pm MT (3:00 pm PT) with the women's pole vault and shot put.
The Scarlet & Gray are no strangers to NAU-hosted meets, as the program has opened an indoor season in Flagstaff for three straight years and in six of the past seven campaigns. In fact, the Rebels have attended two meets in all but one year (2010) since 2008.
With the graduation of Emily Blok, Kelsey Williamson and Uchechi Anunkor, the Rebels will look to Monay Meggs, Auzsane Crowe-Carter, Alva Castillo, Erin Morris, Cortney Miller and Adrianna Oliva for leadership of the 2014 team.
"We have a very young and talented squad this season and our goal is always to improve from the season before," said UNLV head coach Yvonne Wade. "This first competition is a good way for us to see which Rebels are ready to compete at this time of the year and will have an impact for the rest of the indoor season."
Meggs closed out the 2013 season with a trip to Austin, Texas to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary in the 400m and 4x100m relay after earning Mountain West All-Conference honors with a silver medalist finish in the former event. She will step down in distance Friday to run the 60m and 200m with teammate Ashley Franklin.
Freshmen Laura Anuakpado will make her collegiate debut alongside fellow newcomer Mandy Chitwood and Alva Castillo, a returning senior, in the 400m. Anuakpado was a finalist in the 400m at the 2013 California State Championships.
Crowe-Carter will be competing in two distance races - 800m and mile.
Erin Morris looks to build upon a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles at the 2013 MW Indoor Championships in that event and the 200m.
In the throwing events, Miller and Adrianna Oliva will both step into the ring for the weight throw and shot put.
