Jan. 18, 2008
LAS VEGAS - The UNLV track and field team begins a new era on Saturday at the NAU Lumberjack Invitational, as the Rebels will compete for the first time under new head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams.
It will be the first of three regular season indoor meets for the Rebels, who will have 16 student-athletes competing in the one-day meet held at the J L Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.
"As a staff we are very excited to see what our athletes will be able to do for the start of this season," Scott-Williams said. "They have all worked very hard and are eager to start competing. Our expectations for our first meet of the season are to be competitive against some conference schools and gain confidence for the season."
Rebel student-athletes to watch include school-record holder Monique Humphries, who will be competing in the weight throw and shot put, Lekeisha Lawson in the 60 and 200 meters, Talyah Polee in the long jump and Jennifer Shearer in the mile.
The field includes host NAU, as well as Arizona, BYU, Cal State Bakersfield and New Mexico, and a large group of unattached student-athletes. The first field event of the day is the women's long jump, slated to start at 7:30 a.m. (PT) and the first track event is the women's one-mile run at 10:40 a.m. The meet is scheduled to end at 3:00 p.m., with the final race of the day being the men's 4x400 meter relay.
