Jan. 18, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program kicks off its 2018 indoor season Friday at Northern Arizona's Lumberjack Team Challenge at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Rebels will compete in the one-day meet against Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Marcos, CSU Bakersfield, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and the host Lumberjacks.
The Challenge gets underway at 2:00 pm PT (3:00 pm MT) with three field events: women's pole vault, women's long jump and men's shot put. The track portion is slated to start at 4:00 pm PT (5:00 pm MT) with the women's mile.
"We are excited to get this season started," said head coach Yvonne Wade, the 2017 Mountain West Indoor Coach of the Year. "The team has been working very hard and have been waiting for the opportunity to challenge themselves against other teams. This first meet will tell us where we are and what we need to do moving forward this season."
Stella Clemens and Kylee Vandenberg will be the first to represent the Scarlet & Gray, as the duo will both participate in the long jump, high jump, shot put and 60m hurdles in preparation for their first pentathlon next week in Seattle. Clemens finished second in both the pentathlon and heptathlon at the 2017 MW's Indoor and Outdoor Championships, respectively. Vandenberg, on the other hand, has been sidelined due to injuries the past two years and last competed for UNLV in 2015.
Two other Rebels to watch for in the field events are MacKenna Howard and Cassidy Osborne-Butler in the shot put and hammer throw. The former, who finished second in the shot put at the 2015 MW Indoor Championships, is returning to the Rebel program after serving a two-year LDS mission.
On the track, Drea Austin is entered in the 60m, 200m and 4x400m relay. Austin has helped UNLV's 4x400m relay team earn All-MW Indoor Team honors each of the past three seasons, while she earned all-conference recognition in 2016 and 2017.
The team has seven student-athletes entered in the 400m with three members (Yamilet Biggers, Elisa Rovere and Avi'Tal Perteete) of its distance medley relay running in the event.
