LAS VEGAS - UNLV junior Lekeisha Lawson was named the Mountain West Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced today.
Lawson turned in the strongest performance on the day for UNLV at the season-opening Lumberjack Invitational this past Saturday, which was hosted by Northern Arizona at the J L Walkup Skydome. Lawson won the 200 meters in a time of 24.91, which was her career-best indoor time in the event, and she also took third in the 60 meters with a time of 7.58. The native of Victorville, Calif., also ran a leg on the UNLV A 1600-meter relay team, which took third with a time of 4:05.60. A total of five teams were in the meet, including league members BYU and New Mexico.
Lawson is the first Rebel to earn the honor since Ashley Owens was named the athlete of the week by the conference on Feb. 15, 2006.
Wyoming junior Jake Shanklin was named the men's athlete of the week as well.
