LAS VEGAS - UNLV track and field begins its indoor season this Saturday at the Silver State Open held at the Reno Livestock and Events Center in Reno, Nev. The Rebels will be one eight women's teams competing in a field that includes UNR, CSU Stanislaus, Sacramento State, Fresno State, San Francisco State and CSU Bakersfield.
Head coach Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson enters her fourth year at the helm of the Rebels and she will be guiding a relatively young squad. Among the top returners this season for UNLV is senior Deanna Appuglise, who scored at last year's Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships. Other returning letterwinners are Brittney Bullocks, Katie Hughes and Ashley Patin.
Freshman distance runner Jenni Shearer, who was the Rebels' top runner during this past cross country season, will be competing in her first track meet in a UNLV uniform. Joining her in making their Rebel debuts will be Ali Ainsworth, Ernestine Johnson and Lekeisha Lawson.
The meet will get underway at 8:30 a.m. (PT) with the women's 3,000 meter run. The meet will close with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 9:40 p.m. and the final women's event is the women's 4x400 meter relay which is scheduled for 9:10.
