Rebels Sprint Into Season Opener

Feb. 3, 2005

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The UNLV track and field team opens its 2005 indoor season this weekend at the New Balance Invite, a two-day meet in Manhattan, NY, that begins on Friday, Feb. 4.

It is one of the premier indoor meets in the country and many of the nation's top programs, including LSU, Stanford, Texas and Georgia will be among the teams competing.

The Rebels will be taking eight athletes to the meet, including All-American Christine Spence, who had a strong showing at the Air Force Invitational two weeks ago in her first competition of the season. The senior won the pentathlon and high jump while finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles. Spence scored 3,697 points in the pentathlon, just six points short of an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Spence cleared 5-8.75 and had a time of 8.56 in the 60 meter hurdles.

Spence will be joined in New York by Michele Suszek (5,000 meters), Brittney Bullocks (400, 1600 meter relay), Gaven Jones (1600 meter relay), Kiyota Reed (60 meter hurdles, 60 meters, 1600 meter relay), Halima Decree (60 meters, 200 meters), Miesha McClendon (60 meter hurdles, 60 meters, 200 meters) and Deanna Appuglise (400 meters, 1600 meter relay).

The indoor season is a short one for the Rebels, as they will compete in just two more meets before the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-26 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
