March 20, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program will host the Randall Cunningham Invitational & Sheila Tarr-Smith Multis this Friday and Saturday. Joining the Rebels at Myron Partridge Stadium & Sheila Tarr-Smith Field will be Hawai'i, Southern Utah, Weber State and Claremont College. Some Olympians and elite athletes - former Rebels Amanda Bingson and Christine Spence as well as Hector Cotto, Lashinda Demus and Dalilah Muhammad - will make their way to Las Vegas to compete at the two-day meet alongside the collegiate student-athletes.
The meet kicks off Friday with portions of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. The men's 100m is the day's first event and it's scheduled to begin at 11:00 am. On the women's side, the 100m hurdles start at noon to open up the heptathlon.
The men's and women's hammer throw will also be contested Friday beginning at 2:00 pm. Bingson, a 2012 London Olympian and the current American record holder in the hammer, will attempt to best her own stadium record of 228-10 at approximately 3:00 pm. Last summer, she broke the American record twice with the second one going in the books at 248-5.
Saturday's slate begins bright and early at 9:00 am with the women's shot put on the field and the women's steeple chase on the track 30 minutes later. The decathlon resumes at 11:00 am with the 110 hurdles while the heptathlon starts at 11:30 am with the long jump.
The Rebels began their outdoor season at their own UNLV Track Classic two weeks ago. The Scarlet & Gray took first in 11 of the 19 events. Cortney Miller finished second in the hammer at the meet with a personal-best toss of 188-8.
