Rebels Return To San Diego For A Second Meet

UC San Diego will play host to this weekend's Cal-Nevada Championships.

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV track & field program will head back to Southern California for the second straight weekend with its participation in the 21st Annual Cal-Nevada Championships. This year's meet is hosted by UC San Diego in La Jolla at the Triton Track & Field Stadium. The two-day event will begin Friday, April 4, at noon and run through Saturday, April 5, with the conclusion of the men's and women's 4x400m relays. UNLV's participation will begin with Friday's preliminary heat of the 100m hurdles at 1:15 pm while Saturday's 4x400m relay at 4:25 pm will close out its stay in America's Finest City.

The Rebels will compete in a total of 10 disciplines Friday with six of those counting as preliminary rounds (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles) and carrying over to Saturday's schedule. Besides the finals of those aforementioned events, six others will be contested on day two.

More than 20 different schools from both California and Nevada have entered this weekend's meet, including: Sacramento State, UNLV (women only), Long Beach State, UC Riverside, Cal State L.A., Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State (women only), Pomona-Pitzer, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Cal State San Marcos, Whittier, Azusa Pacific, USC, Point Loma (women only), Pepperdine, Cal Lutheran, Loyola Marymount, Caltech, UC Irvine, Occidental, Soka, San Diego, Westmont, Cal State Stanislaus, La Verne (women only) and Concordia Irvine.

The Scarlet & Gray competed last weekend at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational and came away with a total of 20 top-eight finishes. Auzsane Crowe-Carter had the best showing for the Rebels with her win in the 800m behind a time of 2:09.47.

Besides Crowe-Carter, UNLV had strong efforts from Miranda Menzies in the 1500 (4:40.97), Kenia Bonilla in both the 100m (12:12) and 200m (24.50), Ashley Franklin in the 100m (12:07), Monay Meggs in the 400m (54.31), Alva Castillo in the 400m (55.54), Cortney Miller in the hammer (181-11/55.44m),



Amber Sanford performed well in a trio of events with a 12:32 in the 100m, a 36-11.75 (11.27m) in the triple jump and a 18-10 (5.74m) in the long jump.

The 4x400m relay saw the "A" quartet comprised of Castillo, Meggs, Mandy Chitwood and Crowe-Carter legged out a time of 3:46.34 for fourth. The "B" group of Estrada, Erin Bowers, Akia Armstrong and Ervin was seventh (3:54.53). The "C" edition of Hardy, Franklin, Kylee Vandenberg and Taylar Mills was eighth (3:56.28).

In the hurdles, Jordan Hardy was seventh (14.53) in the 100m version while Noela Estrada (1:02.24) and Joniece Ervin (1:02.61) had the third- and fourth-best times in the 400m.

In the high jump, Madison Johonnot was fourth (5-4.50/1.64m) and Myra Dean was seventh (5-2.50/1.59m). Dean took sixth in the pole vault (10-0.50/3.06m).
