Randall Cunningham Invitational Begins Friday
April 12, 2012
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV track & field program will host its Randall Cunningham Invitational for high school and collegiate student-athletes this Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14 at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field. In conjunction with the meet, the Sheila Tarr-Smith Multi-Events will take place on both days for those competing in the decathlon and heptathlon.
This will be the third installment of the Randall Cunningham Invitational on the high school level, but the first inclusion of collegiate and open athletes.
"In the past, the Randall Cunningham Invitational has been a fairly successful high school meet," said head coach Yvonne Wade. "We wanted an opportunity to get some of the local high school athletes on our campus and build some excitement about track & field in the city. Randall Cunningham has been a great supporter of the sport and our women's program for a number of years. We decided, with his assistance, to host a meet in his name on our campus. We believe this could grow into a major meet in the next few years."
Friday's collegiate action starts with the men's decathlon at 11:00 am with the 100m, while the women's heptathlon starts at noon. In all, the men will participate in five events countered by four for the women.
The high school portion of the meet will take place on Friday after the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon. The boys' and girls' long jump kicks off the action on the field, while the girls' 4x100m relay is the initial event on the track.
Saturday is slated to begin at 9:30 am with the men's discus and the women's 3000m steeplechase. The meet's final event is the men's 4x400m relay set to commence at 3:30 pm that afternoon.
