UNLV women's track and field brings its regular season to a close at the Asics/Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium beginning today with six events and then the rest of the meet will take place Saturday.
This is the final tune up for head coach Barbara Ferrell-Edmonson's squad before the Mountain West Conference Championships, which are May 9-12 in San Diego.
Several Rebels will be looking to earn NCAA regional qualifying marks and also improving on their rankings heading into the league championships. Charlotte Browning has the fastest time in the MWC in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:22.22, which is also a regional qualifying time and the third-fastest time in UNLV history. Lauren Johnson (200 meters) and Meia Tezeno (100 meter hurdles and long jump) have also earned a spot at the NCAA West Regional meet in Eugene, Ore.
Freshman thrower Aja Evans is on the cusp of qualifying for the regional meet in the shot put, as her season-best throw is 14.28M (46'-10.25"), which is just two-hundredths of a meter short of the required distance of 14.30M. Evans' distance though is the fifth-best mark in the league.
The events that will be run on Friday are the men's and women's hammer throw, javelin and long jump. Opening the meet Saturday will be the women's pole vault at 10:00 a.m. (PT) and the first running event is the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase at 11:00 a.m.
