Seven Rebels, Two Relay Squads Qualify For West Preliminary|

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Seven individual members and two relay squads from the No. 25 UNLV track & field team have qualified for the 2017 NCAA Women's Outdoor Championships next week in Austin, Texas. The Rebel participants will head to the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium for the three-day meet that will run May 25-27.
"I’m really proud of our athletes that will advance to the NCAA Preliminary Round,” said head coach Yvonne Wade. “They have worked hard this season and now their focus is to advance to the finals in Eugene. They are focused, the staff is focused and we are ready!”
Destiny Smith-Barnett will participate in both the 100m (top seed) and 200m (13th) after she ran personal-bests in both the 100m (10.94-w) and 200m (22.91) at the MW Outdoors. Najia Hudspeth and Drea Austin (Las Vegas/Foothill HS) will join Smith-Barnett in the 100m and 200m. Hudspeth is seeded 26th in the 100m and 12th in the 200m, while Austin is seeded 41st in the 100m (11.53) and 36th in the 200m (23.51).
Mandy Chitwood qualified for the 800m after her fourth-place finish at the MW Outdoors. Chitwood is 28th in the West Preliminary with a season-best time of 2:07:53 that was posted at the Stanford Invitational.
Taylor Pegram and Jaela Williams will represent the Scarlet & Gray in the 100m hurdles. Pegram, seeded 17th, ran 13.15 at the MW Outdoors, while Williams, ranked 40th, ran a personal-best 13.58 at the Stanford Invitational.
In the field events. Kaysee Pilgrim, who sits first in the high jump nationally, jumped a Conference- and program-best distance of 6-2.75 (1.90m) at the MW Outdoors.
The 4x100m relay squad will also represent the Scarlet & Gray as it’s ranked sixth (43.81: MW Outdoors). Wade will choose between Smith-Barnett, Hudspeth, Austin, Kaysha Love and Pegram to comprise the relay foursome in Austin. The 4x400m relay squad, which is ranked 23rd (3:38.89: Stanford Invitational), will be comprised of four of the following: Chitwood, Austin, the Hudspeth twins and Micayla Coquia (Las Vegas/Legacy HS).
The West Preliminary is one of two qualifying meets the NCAA will hold before its Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 7-10. The East Preliminary will be contested May 25-27 in Lexington, Kentucky., at the University of Kentucky.
