LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebel track and field team has had two individuals claim national championships in the program's history and it has a good opportunity to add to that figure after the hammer throw is completed at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.

Amanda Bingson and Chelsea Cassulo have the chance to join Trena Hull and the late Sheila Tarr-Smith on the exclusive list of Rebels that have finished atop their respective disciplines. Hull won the indoor 1000m run in 1987, while Tarr-Smith finished first overall in the heptathlon (5,856 points) in 1984.

"Our Rebels are going into the NCAA Championships in strong standing and they are ready to compete and represent our university," said head coach Yvonne Scott. "They have a strong chance in returning with not only All-American honors, but also as a national champion in the women's hammer. We are very proud of these two student-athletes and we wish them success on Friday."

Bingson and Cassulo both qualified for the national meet after each finished in the top three at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championship in Eugene, Ore., on May 27. Bingson's throw of 222-10 (67.92m) was the best recorded in both the west and east regionals. Cassulo finished third at the west regional with a toss of 207-5 (63.24m).
