June 25, 2017
SACRAMENTO, California (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV track & field alumna Amanda Bingson (2009-12) finished fifth overall in the hammer throw Sunday at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships. Bingson's finish coupled with Kaysee Pilgrim's seventh-place showing in the high jump gave the Rebel program a pair of top-10 finishers at the national meet contested at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
Bingson, a Las Vegas native and Silverado High School graduate, unleashed her best throw of the day -- a measurement of 228-2 (69.54m) -- in the third round, which moved her from ninth to fifth place. Unfortunately, she fouled on her fourth and fifth attempts and was unable to crack the top three on her sixth toss, which flew 214-8 (65.45).
Dating back to 2012, Bingson has finished between first and fifth in six straight USATF Outdoor Championships/U.S. Olympic Trials. Weeks after she won her third straight Mountain West hammer title in 2012, she claimed second at the U.S. Olympic Trials and, in turn, represented the Red, White & Blue at the London Olympics. She won back-to-back national titles at the 2013 and 2014 Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa, and Sacramento, respectively. In 2015, she was third and represented the U.S. at the IAAF World Championships for the third straight year. She took fourth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
