Aug. 22, 2007
LAS VEGAS - UNLV track and field released its 2008 schedule and the Rebels will host two meets at Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field, the athletics department announced on Wednesday.
This will be the first season for the Rebels under new track and field head coach Yvonne Scott-Williams. UNLV will compete in three regular-season indoor meets and the MWC Indoor Championships and is then slated to run in 11 outdoor meets followed by the MWC outdoor meet.
"This season's schedule will allow our athletes the opportunity to compete in high level competitions against top quality track and field programs without the stress of traveling too far," Scott Williams said. "It gets them prepared to compete at the levels needed for the Mountain West Conference and NCAA West Regional Championships."
The Rebels open their indoor season at the Northern Arizona Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 19 and then will travel to the University of Washington Invitational on Feb. 1-2 before ending the regular season back at NAU on Feb. 16. The league championships are being held at Air Force and begin on Feb. 29 and the NCAA Indoor meet is March 14-15 at Fayetteville, Ark.
UNLV kicks off its outdoor season with the UNLV Collegiate Classic on March 8, the first of a pair of home meets for the Rebels. The Rebels will then compete exclusively in California through March and April before hosting their second meet of the outdoor campaign. The UNLV Invitational will be held April 26 and then the Rebels will close out their regular season at the Steve Scott Invitational on May 3 in Irvine, Calif.
The 2008 MWC Outdoor Championships are being hosted by TCU and will be held May 14-17 in Fort Worth, Texas. The NCAA West Regional is May 30-31 at Northridge, Calif., and the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships are June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa.
"We will be hosting two home meets in hopes of bringing high quality competition to Las Vegas," Scott-Williams said. "Our goal is to establish tradition and to have our athletes become recognized as a strong force at both the conference and national levels."
