Jose Gandara begins his first season as an assistant coach with the UNLV volleyball team after spending the last five years as the assistant head coach of the men's volleyball team at UC Santa Barbara. His duties while at UC Santa Barbara included recruiting, game day preparations and fund raising.
"Coach Gandara brings a wealth of experience and insight to our program, both as an athlete and a coach," said UNLV head coach Allison Keeley said. "As an athlete, he played at the highest levels of international ball and understands what it takes to compete with the best. He is also an experienced coach, as he worked for several years with the Santa Barbara men's volleyball program. He is an outstanding teacher and a great asset to UNLV volleyball."
Gandara who was an All American in 1988 as a Gaucho, brings valuable coaching experience at all levels, including being a member of the USA National Team from 1990-92. Most recently Gandara has played in the Puerto Rico Professional League, with his team finishing in second place last season.
Gandara began his coaching career at UC Santa Barabara in 1992 as an assistant with the men's team. After two years of coaching the men, Gandara was an assistant coach for the women's team at UC Santa Barbara during the 1994 season. He also spent one season as a head coach/player with the San Joan Volleyball Club in the Puerto Rico Professional League.
Gandara received his bachelors' degree in Geography from UC Santa Barbara in 1999.
