Monika Karney, a former two-year letterwinner for the UNLV volleyball program, will make the transition from being a student-athlete to an undergraduate assistant coach this season.
Karney, a junior majoring in microbiology, played in a total of 10 matches and 12 sets the past two seasons, but had her freshman and sophomore campaigns cut short due to injuries. Overall, she compiled three kills, two digs, one assist and one block.
Karney came to UNLV after earning three letters and back-to-back years of Western Cascade Conference recognition. She set the blocking record at Thurston High School in Lacey, Wash. Off of the court, she was honored with the Gilmore Award for her leadership efforts in the band and has played the French horn since sixth grade.
