LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV Volleyball hosted its final tune-up -- the Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage -- Friday at the Cox Pavilion in preparation for the start of the 2017 campaign. The Scarlet won the annual affair, 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 15-25, 25-21) behind double-doubles from Elsa Descamps (17 kills/10 total blocks) and Mariena Hayden (12 kills/10 digs).

The Scarlet, which outhit the Gray by 190 points (.314 to .124), won the first two sets and sealed the victory in the fourth shortly after the Gray took the third frame. In all, the Scarlet threw down 10 more kills (52-42) and committed 12 fewer errors (14-26) in eight fewer attack attempts (121-129).

THE TURNING POINT: The Scarlet regained the momentum in the fourth set behind a .412 hitting efficiency to overcome the Gray's third-set triumph.

STAT OF THE GAME: Three members of the Scarlet squad -- Descamps, Hayden and Thea Sweder (10 kills) -- combined to register 39 kills against seven errors in 82 attack attempts for a .390 hitting efficiency.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Descamps hit .385 and had match highs in both kills and total blocks (two of which were solo) to go along with two assists.

QUOTABLE: "I thought the scrimmage went well tonight, we had good competition," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "The Scarlet kind of ran away with it a little bit, but the Gray fought very well at the end. We had good hitting from the middle hitters from outside hitter; Thea who did a really nice job, Mo (Mariena) did a nice job outside. I thought both setters did a nice job of distributing the sets, as well. We have a few things to work on, like our off blockers getting off the net and getting good approaches, and a little better communication, but other than that, it was fun to see them out on the court again."

*Scarlet's Alison French had 12 kills, eight digs and two assisted blocks.
*Scarlet's Lia Herlosky had a match-high 37 assists and fell one dig -- she had nine -- shy of a double-double.
*Gray's Jill Berg had a team-high 15 kills off a match-best 42 attack attempts.
*Gray's Riley Jacobs had 34 assists, six digs, four assisted blocks, three kills and two aces.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels return to the Cox Pavilion next week to open the 2017 season in their own UNLV Invitational (August 25-26). The Scarlet & Gray will welcome Binghamton, Eastern Washington and UC Davis to Southern Nevada for the two-day affair.
