LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second time in as many years the Gray team won UNLV volleyball's Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage - a precursor for the upcoming volleyball season. After seeing an early 1-0 lead wiped out by second- and third-set wins by the Scarlet side, the Gray fought back to force a fifth set en route to its 3-2 victory (25-15, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-12).

The Gray outhit the Scarlet by a 70-point margin (.232-.162) despite accumulating 10 fewer kills (53- 63) off of 37 less swings (142-179). The winning side was able to post two sets of .300 or better hitting efficiencies with its .455 effort in the first set and its .321 showing in the second frame. The Scarlet, on the other hand, hit .178 or less in four of its sets, but topped out with a .500 clip in the second stanza.

On the other side of the net, the Gray helped itself out by amassing 10.0 team blocks (one solo, 18 assisted) to 4.0 team blocks (eight assisted) by the Scarlet side. Newcomers Sadie Stutzman (one solo, seven assisted) and Julia Topor (six assisted) were the catalysts for Gray's defensive showing at the net, as the pair combined for 13 assisted blocks and one solo put back. Five others were able to post at least two assisted blocks in the contest.

Ceannia Kincade led all attackers with a match-high .440 hitting efficiency to go along with a double-double (11 kills, 10 digs) for the Gray. Kincade was one of two to notch double-doubles, as she was joined by Daryn Glenn and her combination of 12 kills and 17 digs.

Besides helping out on the defensive side of the net, Topor threw down a team-high 17 kills.

Gianni Perryman and Natalie Bulen split the setting duties for the Gray with the former dishing out 27 assists to the latter's 20. The duo came close to notching double-doubles with Perryman having nine digs to Bulen's eight.

Allison Davies led all defensive players with a match-high 24 digs.

The Scarlet side had four players accumulate double digits in kills with a match-high 21 coming from Sekola Falemaka, who added a team-best 17 digs for a double-double. Alyssa Wing (11 kills), Bree Hammel (10 kills) and Madeline Westman (10 kills) rounded out the quartet of those with 10 or more kills in a losing effort.

Stephanie Thelen was the primary setter for the Scarlet, and she had a match-high 52 assists to go along with 10 digs for a double-double. Thelen also registered three aces in the match.

Carly Riehl, who had 14 digs in the scrimmage, aced two serves, as well.

The Scarlet & Gray kick off the 2013 slate with its own UNLV Invitational on Aug. 30-31. The four-team tournament will see UNLV square off against Cal State Fullerton in the home opener on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6:00 pm. The following day, they will play Portland and Kansas State at 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm, respectively.

The Rebels have seven matches against five foes - Colorado State (twice), San Diego State (twice), Arizona State, Kansas State and Western Kentucky - that earned berths to the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
