Bears Claw Out Three-Set Win Against Rebels

GREELEY, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (0-2) succumbed to the Northern Colorado Bears (1-0) in straight sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) Friday night at the Hampton Inn & Suites Classic held at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley, Colo. The loss was the second for UNLV to open up the 2011 campaign after falling 3-1 to Colorado earlier in the day.
UNC out-hit UNLV .200 to -.021 in the match and owned a 19-kill advantage (41-to-22) despite tallying two less attacks than the Rebels (95-to-97). The Bears also had two fewer errors than their foes (22-to-24). The home team hit better than .176 in all three of its sets and topped out at .250 in the second. UNLV, on the other hand, had its best effort in the second with a .037 hitting efficiency.
Makenzie Moea'i had good numbers on both sides of the net, as she tied for the team lead with seven kills and led the squad in digs with eight.
Daryn Glenn tied Moea'i in kills with seven of her own.
Amanda Alles led the Rebels in assists with 11.
Defensively, Madeline Westman was a force at the net with six total blocks, which included two solo putbacks. Westman also chipped in three kills.
UNC was led by a double-double effort from Kelley Arnold, who combined 13 kills and 13 digs to achieve the feat. Arnold also had three assisted blocks and two assists.
Marissa Hughes dished out 31 of her squad's 38 helpers, while also throwing down six kills and also contributing four aces, three digs and three assisted blocks.
Brittany Crenshaw also had a good effort for the Bears with seven kills and seven assisted blocks.
UNLV is back in action Saturday at noon (11:00 am) against the UC Davis Aggies. The match will be the Rebels third and final one at UNC's tournament.
