Rebels Swept Away At The Beach

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (0-2) suffered a 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 16-25) defeat Friday night in the Long Beach State Baden Classic to the host 49ers in the Walter Pyramid. UNLV got strong showings from freshmen Madeline Westman and Sekola Falemaka in the loss to LBSU, who sits on the outside looking in in the AVCA Preseason Top 25 Poll at 26th.
Westman, who racked up six kills earlier Friday in a 3-0 loss to #25 Saint Mary's, threw down a team-best 10 kills this evening against LBSU. Westman hit at a .278 clip with five errors in 18 attempts.
Candice Thomas owned the best hitting efficiency for UNLV with her .444 tally with five kills and one error in nine swings.
Amanda Alles went back to being the primary setter for UNLV after sharing duties in the SMC loss and dished out 27 of the team's 29 registered assists.
Falemaka, who was playing in her second career match, recorded a team-best 10 digs.
LBSU out-hit UNLV by a .297 to .137 effort. The 49ers began the match with a .257 output in the first frame and kept improving as the match progressed with a .267 efficiency in the second and .385 in the third. UNLV, on the other hand, opened with a .235 efficiency before dropping to .152 (second) and .000 (third).
The 49ers got a double-double from Janisa Johnson, who tied for match- and team-highs in kills and digs with 12 and 11, respectively. Caitlin Ledoux tied Johnson for the match-high in kills with 12 of her own.
Ashley Vazquez led LBSU in assists with a match-high 32, while Lauren Minkel added 11 digs of her own.
UNLV returns to action Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm with its third and final contest in the LBSU Baden Classic. The Rebels will square off against the Rutgers Scarlett Knights
