LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (0-1) lost their 2008 season-opening match to the Dayton Flyers (1-0) in Tempe, Ariz. The teams were the first match of the day in Arizona State's Sheraton Classic. The Rebels came out strong with a win in the first set, but dropped the final three to lose the match by scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 26-24.

Overall, UNLV was out hit in the match .241 to .159. Dayton threw down 61 kills to UNLV's 52. UNLV jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with help from its .250 hitting efficiency in the first set, but swung well below that figure the remainder of the match. Dayton evened the score at 1-1 with help from its .333 hitting figure and UNLV's lowly -.029. The Flyers managed a set-high 20 kills on .293 hitting en route to a 2-1 lead. The Rebels hit better than DU in the fourth, but weren't able to pull on the right side of a 24-24 tie, as the Flyers took the set 26-24.

UNLV was paced by double-doubles from Melody Nua and Samantha Richard. Nua has now notched 28 career double-doubles, while this was the first for Richard, as a Rebel. Nua combined a team-high 47 assists with 10 digs to amass the feat, while Richard used 10 kills and 12 digs. Nua has now hit the double-digit mark in assists in 90 career matches.

The Rebels were paced offensively by Jessica Walters' match-high 17 kills. Walters led UNLV in hitting, as well, with her .294 efficiency. Erin Greenwood joined Richard and Walters in the double-digit kill category as she contributed 11.

Defensively, Camille Cunningham was the main line of defense for UNLV in the match, as she racked up a career and match-high 23 digs. Cunningham was joined in the double-digit dig club by Gerryn Moran (16 digs), Nua and Richard.

 

 

Dayton's Erin Schroeder earned the lone double-double for the Flyers with her 47 assist and 22 dig figures. Schroeder notched all but two of DU's assists in the match.

Nicole Bateman topped the Flyers in kills with 16, while Lindsay Fletemier was close behind with 14. Fletemier hit a staggering .684 in the match with only one error in 19 attempts.

Next up for UNLV is a 7:00 pm tilt with the host Sun Devils on Friday night.
