MORAGA, Calif. - The UNLV volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-23) victory over UC-Riverside in the first game of the St. Mary's Tournament on Friday night. The Rebels out-hit the Highlanders .307 (41-14-88) to .042 (31-27-95).

Junior transfer Tarin Keith led all players with 14 kills and a .458 (14-3-24) attack percentage. She also tallied seven digs and two blocks in her Rebel debut.

The Rebels are playing with out the services of sophomore Sheila Ocasio-Clemente who is competing with the Puerto Rican National Team. Junior Christina Kirschner stepped into the starting middle blocker position with five blocks, seven kills and three digs. UNLV put up 15 team blocks to UC-Riverside's three.

Sophomore setter Nicki King put together a flawless night, serving up 33 assists, a team-high eight digs, two aces and a pair of kills (2-0-2).

Leiana Oswald added eight kills and seven digs, while Patricia Assuncao finished with six kills and three blocks.

Sarah Fachner, who has been hampered by injuries over the past two season's, made her collegiate debut against Riverside with three kills and four block assists.

The Highlanders were led by Katie DeRoos' nine kills and three digs.

Tournament play continues on Saturday when the UNLV takes on Army at 9:00 a.m. and concluded later that evening with a 7:05 p.m. match between UNLV and host St. Mary's.
