LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (3-2) suffered a 3-1 loss (17-25, 16-25, 25-22, 15-25) to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks (6-1) at New Mexico State's SpringHill Suites Invitational, which is being held at the Pan American Center.

The Scarlet & Gray was led by Elsa Descamps, who had team highs in kills (10) and total blocks (six/one solo). Jill Berg, Mariena Hayden and Ashley Owens had seven kills apiece, while Thea Sweder added six of her own.

Riley Jacobs and Leka Kiner-Falefa paced the team in assists (33) and digs (21), respectively.

UND outhit UNLV by 167 points (.216 to .049), and owned advantages in both kills (52-37) and errors (22-30) despite its offense attempting five fewer attack attempts (139-144). The Hawks topped out with a .364 hitting efficiency, but was held within a .114 (third set) to .273 (fourth) range the remainder of the match. The Rebels, on the other hand, were near .000 for three sets of the contest; however, they hit .222 in the third.

THE TURNING POINT: UND, which had its lead cut in half with UNLV's third-set win, regained control of the match with a 4-0 run early in the fourth that snapped a 5-all tie. The Hawks carried that momentum through the remainder of the set, which they, ultimately, won by 10 points.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV's offense was held to a combined -.009 hitting efficiency (23-24-108) between the first, second and third sets.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Descamps led the Rebels in kills (10), hitting efficiency (.214) and total blocks (six).

QUOTABLE: "We struggled this morning to get our offense going," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our passes did a good getting the ball to Riley (Jacobs), but we committed too many hitting errors. North Dakota is a very solid senior-heavy team and they took advantage of their experience today.

REBEL NOTES:
*Friday's match between UNLV and North Dakota was the first between the two programs.
*With help from her four total blocks (one solo), Ashley Owens became the seventh Rebel all-time to amass 300-plus assisted blocks. She also became only the seventh with 40 solo blocks and eighth with 340-plus total blocks.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels continue their stay in Las Cruces with two more matches at NMSU's SpringHill Suites Invitational. They will play No. 11 UCLA (9:00 am PT) and New Mexico State (6:00 pm PT) Saturday at the Pan American Center.

REBELS AT HOME: The Rebels return to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion to host their own UNLV Challenge on September 8-9. The Scarlet & Gray will welcome Weber State, UC Irvine and Louisville to Las Vegas for the two-day, round-robin tournament.
