LAS CRUCES, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (3-4) was unable to hang onto an early lead in its 3-1 loss (25-23, 20-25, 24-26, 17-25) to New Mexico State in the finale of the NM State SpringHill Suites Invitational Saturday night.

The Rebels got a double-double from Riley Jacobs, who paired 36 assists with 12 digs. Jacobs added two assisted blocks and one ace.

The trio of Ashley Owens, Mariena Hayden and Thea Sweder combined for 31 of the Rebels' 40 kills. Owens and Hayden had 12 and 11, respectively, while Sweder chipped in eight.

Owens and Hayden were also key defensively with eight and five assisted blocks. Elsa Descamps had four assisted blocks to help UNLV notch 12.0 total team blocks in the match.

Leka Kiner-Falefa was a stalwart in the back row for the Rebels, as she posted a match-best 28 digs.

NMSU outhit UNLV by 62 points (.151 to .089) off advantages in kills (60-40) and attack attempts (179-158); however, the hosts committed seven more errors (33-26). The Aggies also dished out 21 more assists (58-37) and recorded 13 more digs (82-69) than UNLV.

THE TURNING POINT: NMSU won the final two points in the third set after it withstood a 14-7 ally from UNLV that drew the teams even at 24-all. The Aggies went ahead 2-1 with that set victory and eventually closed out the contest in the fourth, with the help of a set- and match-closing 19-10 run of their own.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV attempted 158 attacks in the match; however, the trio of Jordon Abalos (25 digs), Ariadnne Sierra (21) and Briana Ainsworth (12) were responsible for digging 57 of those to keep the play alive throughout the match.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Jacobs had 36 assists and 12 digs to register her first career double-double. Her 12 digs were a career high.

QUOTABLE: "We fought hard tonight, but didn't put the ball away," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our passing and serving was solid but New Mexico State played much better defense and ran a better offense tonight. Leka (Kiner-Falefa) played a very good defense and Ashley (Owens) and Thea (Sweder) were strong on offense. We'll need to get more from our outsides so we can be more balanced.

REBEL NOTES:
*Owens' eight assisted blocks moved her into sixth place in the program's career record book with 310, and they also pushed her into seventh in total blocks (351). She sits ninth in solo blocks (41).
*Jacobs is the third Rebel to record a double-double this season; Hayden has two and Jill Berg has one.
*UNLV's loss to NMSU snapped a four-match winning streak; however, the Rebels still lead the head-to-head series 4-2.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels return to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion to host their own UNLV Challenge on September 8-9.
