RedHawks Claw Their Way Past Rebels

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels (2-4) dropped its final match of the UNLV Invitational Saturday evening at the Cox Pavilion to the Miami RedHawks (4-2) by a 3-0 margin. By virtue of a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend, Miami won the tournament title. The RedHawks won the match by set scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-23.
The RedHawks hit at a .380 clip for the match. Miami jumped out quickly from the get-go with a .421 hitting efficiency in the first set and followed it up with a .464 in the second. The RedHawks lowest hitting tally came in the third when they swung at a .286 pace. In all, MU committed only eight errors with four coming in the third.
UNLV, on the other hand, hit .178 in the three-setter. The Rebels had its best effort in the first frame with a .242 efficiency. The remaining sets saw the team hit .120 (second) and .163 (third).
UNLV was led offensively by Samantha Noland and her nine kills. Noland committed only two errors in 23 attempts and hit .304. Erin Greenwood followed closely behind Noland's figure with seven kills of her own.
Melody Nua assisted on 20 of UNLV kills, while knocking down four on her own.
Camille Cunningham let all defensive players with 14 digs in the match.
MU got a double-double from tournament MVP Andrea Atteberry with her 42 assists and 10 digs. Both numbers were good enough for team-highs, while the assists were the most in the match.
Michelle Metzler and Emily Schroeder led the RedHawks in attacking with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Metzler hit at a staggering .650 clip with no errors in 20 attempts.
Next up for UNLV is the Oregon Classic in Eugene, Ore., beginning Sept. 12. The Rebels will square off with the host Ducks on the 12th at 7:00 pm. The following day, Sept. 13, UNLV will play a pair with Baylor up first at 10:00 am and Eastern Washington at 4:30 pm.
