SPOKANE, Wash. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (2-2) opened up the Gonzaga Invitational with a 3-0 loss to the host Bulldogs (1-3) at the Martin Centre in Spokane, Wash., on Friday evening. UNLV was led offensively by Sekola Falemaka and Daryn Glenn, who contributed 14 and 11 kills, respectively.
Gonzaga outhit UNLV by 168 points (.374 to .206) and had six more kills (43-37) and eight less errors (91-97) off six less attempts (91-97). The Bulldogs hit no worse than .333 - first set - in any frame, while they topped out with a .407 clip before the intermission. The Rebels, on the other hand, had their best showing in the opening set - .286, before hitting .103 and .212 in the subsequent stanzas.
"We just never got on track tonight," said Rebel volleyball head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Daryn and Sekola played well, but we didn't get any other offensive support. We have to have more players stepping up. It makes a difference not having Madeline Westman in the lineup."
Besides leading the Rebels in kills, Falemaka and Glenn led the Scarlet & Gray in hitting with their .321 and .320 efforts, respectively. The former also topped all UNLV players with nine digs - tied with Allison Davies - and three aces, while adding two assists and one blocking assist. Glenn contributed seven digs, four assisted blocks and two assists.
Stephanie Thelen dished out a match-high 29 assists, while chipping in five digs, two kills and one assisted block.
Gonzaga was paced by 13 kills from Savannah Blinn, who registered a staggering .619 hitting efficiency, and 10 more from Meredith Crenshaw.
The Bulldogs were led by 21 assists from Lauren Joseph and 15 more from Janelle Futch, while on the defensive end Kathleen Wright had 10 digs and Paige Folger had five assisted blocks.
UNLV returns to action on Saturday on the second day of the Invitational. The Rebels start the day with a 10:00 am match with Arizona State followed by another outing at 4:00 pm vs. Seattle.
NOTES: With the addition of her 29 assists tonight, Thelen became only the fifth Rebel in program history to amass at least 1,500 career assists ... Thelen sits fifth overall in the category ... With the addition of her nine digs, Allison Davies sits sixth overall in Rebel program history with 876 digs ... Davies is two digs away from tying Kela Lau Hee (2007-10) for fifth in the category.
