Rebels Trounce The Tigers|
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Rebel volleyball team improved to 5-3 on the year behind a 3-0 sweep of the Texas Southern Lady Panthers (2-7) in the UNLV Classic on Saturday afternoon in the Cox Pavilion. UNLV won the match - its fifth this season in sweeping fashion - behind set scores of 25-10, 25-16, 25-17.
UNLV out-hit TSU .311 to .075 with help from 27 more kills (49-22) off 23 more swings (103-80). The Rebels committed only one more error in the contest (17-16). The Scarlet & Gray opened up the contest with a .500 effort in the first stanza before following up with two efforts in the .200s (.211 and .293). The Lady Panthers, on the other hand, began with a negative hitting efficiency (-.095) prior to a .100 (second set) and .172 (third).
The Rebels were led by 12 kills from both Candice Thomas and Stephanie Thelen, who also hit at .625 and .550 clips - both career highs, respectively. Thelen also chipped in three assists, three digs, one solo block and one ace.
Kinsey Caldwell, who contributed nine digs, four kills and an ace, led all players with 34 assists.
Allison Davies amassed a match-high 12 digs along with two assists and an ace.
TSU was led by nine kills from Robyn Shannon, 15 assists from Sarah Wooten and six digs from Mona Reed.
In the day's first match, Gonzaga defeated Prairie View A&M by a 3-0 score, which sets up a winner-take-all battle between GU and UNLV at 5:00 pm for the tournament title. PVAMU and TSU will play the Classic's final match at 7:00 pm.
