Rebels Soar Past Eagles Saturday Afternoon

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels improved to 5-3 on the year with their fifth consecutive win with Saturday afternoon's 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18) victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles (3-6). UNLV came out of the gates a bit slow, but turned things around in the second set and kept the pedal down the remainder of the match.
UNLV out-hit EWU .179 to .153 and collected nine more kills (57-to-48) and amassed six more errors (29-to-23) on seven fewer attempts (156-to-163). The Rebels owned three sets of .200 or better hitting and topped out at .355 in the fourth and final frame. EWU, on the other hand, opened with its best effort in the first (.429) before hitting .118 or less the rest of the match.
The Rebels were led by Sekola Falemaka's second consecutive double-double. Falemaka achieved the feat by combining 14 kills with 16 digs. She also contributed two blocks (one solo), one ace and one assist.
Makenzie Moea'i led all attackers with 16 kills off of .262 hitting. Moea'i added three digs and three blocks (one solo).
Madeline Westman owned the best hitting efficiency in the match with a .345 (13-3-29) and threw down 13 kills. Westman also had four digs and four blocks (one solo).
Stephanie Thelen had a match-high 50 assists and chipped in eight digs, two kills and one assisted block.
UNLV's defense came up large in the match with a total of 76 digs and 12 blocks (four solo). Three Rebels racked up double-digit dig figures with Taylor Richard leading the team with 19. Falemaka and Allison Davies had 16 apiece.
EWU was led by a double-double from Laney Brown, who had 17 assists and 11 digs. Shelby Puckett was the top hitter for the Eagles with 10 kills, while Amy Vanderwel had a match-high 21 digs.
In the day's first match, Southern Utah defeated Cal State Northridge by a 3-1 score.
The Rebels return to the court later Saturday night with a 7:00 pm tussle with Northridge. Prior to that match, SUU and EWU square off to close out their portion of the Invitational at 4:30 pm.
