LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV volleyball team returned to the Cox Pavilion after two weeks of road matches; however, the Rebels (4-12, 0-3 MW) did not come away with the result they hoped for in their Mountain West home opener Thursday night against the Utah State Aggies (11-4, 3-0 MW). The visitors from the Beehive State claimed the bout 3-1 behind set scores of 25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18.

The Aggies outhit the Rebels by 143 points (.286 to .143) and also threw down 10 more kills (57-47) and committed 10 fewer errors (15-25) in seven fewer attack attempts (147-154). USU hit .235 or better in three of the four sets, with a match-best .464 efficiency in the fourth frame. UNLV, on the other hand, topped out at .275 in its third-set win, but was held to .176 or lower figures in the other stanzas.

THE TURNING POINT: Moments after losing the third set and seeing UNLV extend the match, USU regained its momentum by winning the first four points in the fourth set. That lead was cut to two twice, but it also grew to as much as eight once -- at the 20-12 juncture.

STAT OF THE GAME: USU's Kayla DeCoursey hit at a .567 clip with 15 kills against zero errors in 30 attack attempts, while the rest of the team hit a combined .217 (40-15-117).

REBELS OF THE GAME: Mariena Hayden and Riley Jacobs had double-doubles in the match, and they were their fourth and second of the year, respectively. Hayden achieved the feat with a combination of 17 kills, which tied for the match high, and 12 digs. Jacobs double-double came off a pairing of 40 assists and 10 digs.

QUOTABLE: "It was good to see Mo (Mariena Hayden) and Ali (French) hit well tonight," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We need to get all of our hitters doing well at the same time. Small steps; we'll get there."

*With her five total blocks (all assisted), Ashley Owens moved into a three-way tie for second place with Bree Hammel (2013-16) and Lauren Miramontes (2003-07) in the program's career record book in assisted blocks with 344. Owens, who has 393 total blocks, is one block shy of moving into a tie with Hammel for third place.
