Box Score

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV volleyball team rattled off an 8-1 run to come from behind and win the fifth set, 15-12, and, subsequently, the match, 3-2, against the Wyoming Cowgirls Saturday at the Cox Pavilion. With the win, the Rebels improved to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in the Mountain West, while the Cowgirls dropped to 12-10 on the year and 7-3 in league play.

The Scarlet & Gray outhit UW by 44 points (.184 to .140), primarily, due to a plus-seven kill differential (65-58) posted by the Rebel attackers. UNLV attempted eight fewer attack attempts (185-193), while both teams committed 31 errors. The Rebels hit .225 or better in all three sets they won, but was held to .167 or lower efficiencies in the two frames that Wyoming claimed. The Cowgirls, on the other hand, topped out with their best hitting effort in the fourth -- a .229, but was limited to .167 or worse in the four remaining stanzas.

THE TURNING POINT: Trailing by four points in the fifth and final set, UNLV scored eight of the final nine points to rally for a 15-12 win. The Rebels' Ashley Owens, who had 16 kills in the contest, had four of the team's eight points during the run. Thea Sweder and Mariena Hayden contributed two kills in the outburst, while an error from UW's Jackie McBride aided UNLV, too. McBride; however, was the only Cowgirl to notch any offense against the Rebels.

STAT OF THE GAME: In the three sets that UNLV won in the match its offense committed five of fewer errors, while it misfired nine or more times in the first- and fourth-set loses. By virtue of minimizing their mistakes, the Rebels hit .225 (second set), .286 (third) and .250 (fourth) in those winning frames.

STAT OF THE GAME, PART DEUX: UNLV's trio of Owens, Hayden and Elsa Descamps combined to register 47 of the team's 65 kills (72 percent) in the match. Additionally, Owens and Descamps combined for 31 kills against three errors in 61 attack attempts, which translated to a .459 hitting efficiency. By contrast, the rest of the team hit .048 in the affair.

REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Owens and Descamps combined for 31 kills and hit .459 for the match. Additionally, the pair had a hand in nine of the team's 14.0 total team blocks. They each had two solo blocks, while Owens had one more assisted putback (3-2).

QUOTABLE: "We played so tough today against a very good Wyoming team," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Elsa and Ashley really dominated offensively and Riley (Jacobs) got them the ball. Our passing and defense was solid today, as well. They (Wyoming) went after Mo (Mariena Hayden) on serve-receive and she responded with very good passes. Leka (Kiner-Falefa) and Elena (Ivanova) came up strong on defense and Shania (Scott) serving at the end of the fifth set was very good."
