LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by the San Diego State Aztecs in Mountain West action Thursday evening at Peterson Gym. The Rebels (8-20, 4-11 MW) fell behind 1-0 after the opening set of play, but fought back with a win in the second to push the score to 1-all. Unfortunately, the host Aztecs (15-13, 9-6 MW) rattled off wins in the third and fourth frames for the victory, which was by sets scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-12, 25-13.
SDSU outhit UNLV by 225 points (.295 to .070) with help from 28 more kills (60-32) and one fewer error (22-23) in only one more attack attempt (129-128). The Aztecs managed to hit .290 or better and only committed five errors in all three sets they won, while their attackers posted a .188 hitting efficiency and misfired seven times in the second set. The Rebels, on the other hand, topped out with a .414 effort in the second, which saw them register 14 kills against two errors. The team did not fair as well in the three sets it lost, as they hit .000 or worse and had a minimum of six errors in each frame.
The Rebels dominated defensively at the net with a 13.0 to 8.0 advantage in total team blocks -- all of which were of the assisted variety. Ashley Owens led the team with seven blocks, while Erin Davis and Elsa Descamps had six apiece. Three others had at least two, as well.

QUOTABLE: "We passed really well tonight, but didn't generate any offense," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "In the second set we had good offense and kept San Diego State on their heels, but we just couldn't maintain."
