Rebels Lose In Four Sets To Aztecs

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by the San Diego State Aztecs in Mountain West action Thursday evening at Peterson Gym. The Rebels (8-20, 4-11 MW) fell behind 1-0 after the opening set of play, but fought back with a win in the second to push the score to 1-all. Unfortunately, the host Aztecs (15-13, 9-6 MW) rattled off wins in the third and fourth frames for the victory, which was by sets scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-12, 25-13.

SDSU outhit UNLV by 225 points (.295 to .070) with help from 28 more kills (60-32) and one fewer error (22-23) in only one more attack attempt (129-128). The Aztecs managed to hit .290 or better and only committed five errors in all three sets they won, while their attackers posted a .188 hitting efficiency and misfired seven times in the second set. The Rebels, on the other hand, topped out with a .414 effort in the second, which saw them register 14 kills against two errors. The team did not fair as well in the three sets it lost, as they hit .000 or worse and had a minimum of six errors in each frame.

The Rebels dominated defensively at the net with a 13.0 to 8.0 advantage in total team blocks -- all of which were of the assisted variety. Ashley Owens led the team with seven blocks, while Erin Davis and Elsa Descamps had six apiece. Three others had at least two, as well.

STAT OF THE GAME: SDSU notched double-digit kills in all four sets, while UNLV only did so once. The Aztecs threw down at least 13 kills in each stanza with 17 coming in the fourth and final set. The Rebels had 14 kills in the second, but had seven, six and five in the sets they lost.

REBEL(S) OF THE GAME: Mariena Hayden had a team-high 12 kills with five digs, three assisted blocks and one ace.



QUOTABLE: "We passed really well tonight, but didn't generate any offense," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "In the second set we had good offense and kept San Diego State on their heels, but we just couldn't maintain."

*With help from her 12 kills, Hayden has notched 10 or more kills in 10 of UNLV's last 13 matches.
*With help from one ace -- her 36th of the season, Hayden moved into a ninth-place tie with Rebel alumnae Camille Cunningham and Kari Zimmerman in the program's chart for single-season aces. Cunningham and Zimmerman notched their 36 aces in 2007 and 1985, respectively.
*With help from her seven assisted blocks, Owens moved into seventh place in the program's chart for single-season total blocks. Owens surpassed four Rebel alumnae with Thursday's haul.
*With help from her seven assisted blocks, Owens became only the second Rebel to accumulate 450 or total blocks in a career. To date, she has 451. Rebel alumna Madeline Westman (2010-13) sits ahead of Owens in the program's record book with her 515 total blocks. Owens is four assisted blocks from 400 for her career.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: UNLV will stay out on the road for a Monday night contest at New Mexico in Albuquerque, with first serve set for 6:00 pm PT (7:00 pm PT). The Rebels return to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion afterwards for their final home match, which is also Senior Day, on Saturday, November 18 against Air Force.
