Season Comes To Close With Loss To Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. ( - The UNLV volleyball team closed out its 2017 season with a 3-0 loss to the Fresno State Bulldogs in Mountain West play Monday evening at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs (12-18, 7-11 MW) claimed the three-set contest behind set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-8. With the loss, the Rebels conclude the year 8-23 overall and 4-14 in the MW.

FS outhit UNLV by 133 points (.216 to .083) backed by eight more kills (42-34) and eight fewer errors (15-23) in seven fewer attack attempts (125-132). The Bulldogs’ hitting efficiency improved in each subsequent, beginning with a .140 in the first before it was upped to .240 and then .281 in the second and third, respectively. The Rebels, on the other hand, saw their hitting numbers decline frame by frame, with a .204 to .170 to -.194.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV and FS had kill-to-error differentials of plus-18 apiece through two sets of play, with the former hitting .188 to the latter’s .194. The third set was much different; however, as the Rebels hit -.194 with a minus-7 ratio compared to the Bulldog’s .281 efficiency and plus-9.

REBEL OF THE GAME: Elsa Descamps led the UNLV in hitting (.250) and total blocks (four: all assisted) and tied for the lead in kills (eight).

QUOTABLE: “This has been a tough season, but I do think our kids always played hard,” said head coach Cindy Fredrick. “We played a good first set, but lost momentum after that and just didn’t put the ball away. We will have a good deal of work to do this spring.”

*Ashley Owens played her final match for the Rebels Monday and closed out her four-year career ranked second in both total blocks (462) and assisted blocks (404) in the program’s record book. She also finished seventh in solo blocks (58), tied for ninth in matches played (113) and 10th in hitting efficiency (.256).
*Owens also had her name listed numerous times in the program’s single-season record book: total blocks (third: 161 in 2015 and fifth: 146 in 2017), assisted blocks (third: 146 in 2015; ninth: 118 in 2017) and solo blocks (sixth: 28 in 2017).
*Descamps closes out her junior season ranked in four of UNLV’s career records: hitting efficiency (fifth: 285), total blocks (ninth: 316), solo blocks (seventh: 58) and assisted blocks (ninth: 274).
*Descamps has also put her name in the single-season record book this year, as she ranks eighth in solo blocks with 26 this season. She was already in total blocks (fourth: 148 in 2016) and assisted blocks (fourth: 136 in 2016).
*Riley Jacobs finished her sophomore season ranked 10th in career assists with 1,004.
*Two others placed their names in the single-season record book, as Mariena Hayden is third in aces (43) and seventh in total attempts (1,116), while Leka Kiner-Falefa is fifth in digs (480).
*Descamps, Hayden, Kiner-Falefa, Owens and Shania Scott played in all 121 sets this season, which are tied for the fourth most in a single season in program history. Jacobs played in 120 sets to place ninth behind the aforementioned quintet.
