March 26, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - After spending a couple of weeks in the gym for spring practice, the UNLV volleyball team returns to head-to-head competition the next three weekends with a pair of one-day tournaments on the road and a third at home.
With the graduation of Madeline Westman, Stephanie Thelen and Sekola Falemaka, UNLV's roster will be comprised of 12 players: four juniors (Katlin Winters, Daryn Glenn, Jayme Jacinto and Allison Davies), one sophomore (Ceannia Kincade) and seven freshmen (Bree Hammel, Alyssa Wing, Natalie Bulen, Megan Dempsey, Julia Topor, Carly Riehl and Sadie Stutzman).
"We're looking forward to getting back on the court with the tournament at Southern Utah," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We'll have an opportunity to play people in a lot of positions and see how the offense develops. We have some big shoes to fill with the graduation of Sekola, Maddie and Steph."
The Rebels open up tournament action at Southern Utah on Saturday, March 29 in Cedar City, Utah. Besides UNLV and SUU, Dixie State, Snow College, Fort Lewis College and Western Wyoming Community College will also participate.
The Scarlet & Gray will host its own tourney on April 5 at the MPE North Gym. One week after playing Dixie State and SUU in the Beehive State, those two squads as well as Weber State, College of Southern Idaho and a team comprised of UNLV volleyball alumnae will compete against the Rebels.
The third and final affair will take place at San Diego State on April 12. UNLV is only scheduled to square off against UC San Diego, UC Irvine and UC Riverside although many more teams will be in attendance.
