LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Rebels hosted their own spring tournament this past Saturday and finished fourth out of the six participating teams. The tournament was held in the Cox Pavilion practice gym and saw New Mexico come out on top in the day's competition. Arizona, Cal State San Bernardino, Missouri State and Montana rounded out the field.
Overall, UNLV played in four matches, which were played to a maximum of three sets. The Rebels went the distance in each and defeated Missouri State, but dropped matches to CSUSB, Arizona and New Mexico.
"It was exciting to get out there and see what our girls could do against some live competition," noted head coach Allison Keeley. "I thought Sara Nehf had an excellent tournament and was very efficient with her shots. Sam Richard was very consistent running a 5-1 offense, which is new for us. Leah Maurer anchored our team with her passing and outside hitting. Kela Lau Hee did a good job filling in as the libero for the first time."
"It was nice to see the amount of fans that came out to support us," said assistant coach Elaini Kollias. "We had some former Rebels cheering us on from the sidelines, as Laura Miramontes, Melody Nua and Gerryn Moran were in attendance.
UNLV is back in action this Saturday, as it heads to Los Angeles to play in a tourney hosted by USC. Besides the Rebels and Women of Troy, Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, San Diego, Cal State Northridge, UC Irvice, Long Beach State and Jefferson College will participate.
