June 9, 2017

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV volleyball program’s incoming freshman class has garnered honorable mention status in’s annual listing of the top collegiate recruiting classes. The Rebels’ placement is based on the additions of Jill Berg (Yakima, Washington), Lauren Burt (League City, Texas), Erin Davis (Los Angeles), Alison French (Reno), Mariena Hayden (Belle Plaine, Minnesota) and Shania Scott (Yakima, Washington).

The publication does not take into account UNLV’s two international signees; therefore Thea Sweder (Norway) and Elena Ivanova (Bulgaria) are omitted from the team’s ranking.

“We are pleased to see our 2017 recruiting class recognized by PrepVolleyball,” said head coach Cindy Fredrick. “Our class includes players in every position. We have some high flyers, great defenders, passers and solid blockers in this group. We’ll be seeing several of them on the court immediately, and I know everyone will compete for a position on the court. We’ll have a lot of new faces, but the talent and enthusiasm will be exciting to watch.”

This year’s recognition marks the third instance that has noticed a Rebel recruiting class under Fredrick, as both the 2013 and 2014 classes were listed as “highest honorable mention” and “high honorable mention,” respectively.

In addition, the Rebels have also brought in transfer Leka Kiner-Falefa (Honolulu), who played in all 32 matches and a total of 113 sets as a defensive specialist/libero as a freshman last season at North Texas.

The Scarlet & Gray, which won 24 matches a year ago and concluded the season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, opens the 2017 campaign at home on August 25-26. The two-day UNLV Invitational welcomes Binghamton, UC Davis and Eastern Washington to Las Vegas for a total of six matches in the Cox Pavilion.
