Rebels Slated To Finish Fifth In MW Play|
Aug. 14, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team was selected to finish fifth overall this season in the 2012 Mountain West Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's nine head coaches. The Rebels received 42 points to place four spots behind defending conference champion Colorado State, who garnered eight first-place votes and 80 points.
UNLV, who is coming off a 14-17 showing last season, closed out the season with a Cinderella-like run at the 2011 Mountain West Championship. After a seventh-place finish in conference action, the Rebels knocked off second-seeded San Diego State (3-0 sweep) and third-seeded TCU (3-1). Unfortunately, the team's run came to an end with a loss to CSU in the tournament finale.
The 2012 edition returns eight letterwinners, which includes six starters, from last season's campaign. Cindy Fredrick's squad will feature three juniors - Madeline Westman (2011 All-MW), Candice Thomas (2011 All-MW Tournament) and Stephanie Thelen (2011 All-MW Tournament) - that earned postseason accolades.
In all, the roster will be 14 strong with six newcomers sprinkled into the mix. Five of the fresh-faced players are freshmen, while the sixth, Siga Appelgate, is a Las Vegas local that played her first two years at Pacific.
The season begins in less than two weeks with the Rebels kicking off the year at home in its own UNLV Invitational on Aug. 24-25. The Rebels welcome CSU Bakersfield, The Citadel and Northern Arizona to the Cox Pavilion for the two-day affair. There will be a total of six matches played that weekend with two on Friday and four more on Saturday.
On Saturday, Aug. 18, UNLV will play its Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage in the Cox Pavilion from 6-8:00 pm. The scrimmage is open to the public and free of charge.
CSU's eight first-place votes put an 11-point disparity between itself and San Diego State, which picked up 69 points for second place. Wyoming, the only other team to receive a first-place vote, came in third with 66 points. Fresno State (45 points) closed out the four squads that were ahead of UNLV.
New Mexico (40), Boise State (36), Nevada-Reno (16) and Air Force (11) rounded closed out the poll in positions six through nine.
