Rebels To Host Two Preseason Tune-Ups|
Aug. 14, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - With the start of the 2014 campaign only two weeks away, the Rebel volleyball program will host a pair of scrimmages leading up to its season-opening UNLV Invitational on Aug. 29-31. The first preseason contest will take place in the Cox Pavilion Saturday, Aug. 16, between this year's squad and a team comprised of Rebel alumnae. One week later, on Aug. 23, the team will play its annual Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage in the Cox Pavilion practice gym. Both matches are slated to begin at 6:00 pm.
UNLV began its preseason practices last Saturday. The Rebels are coming off a 16-14 showing in 2013 that saw them clinch a share of fourth place in the Mountain West with four other teams who had identical 11-9 marks. This year's team features six newcomers (five freshmen and one junior transfer) to go along with 11 returning players, which includes four starters (Allison Davies, Katlin Winters, Daryn Glenn and Carly Riehl).
"We have had a good six days of practice," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "It's been a lot of teaching as we have new kids and many who will be in a new position or seeing increased playing time. It's a puzzle right now, finding all the pieces that go together. We have some key positions which we will need to fill after the graduation of Stephanie Thelen, Madeline Westman and Sekola Falemaka. I like this group; they are hard working and smart. It's a young group and it may take some time to bring it all together, but I like the possibilities."
Coming back to campus this weekend for the alumnae match are Lauren (Miramontes) Asnaran, Nicki King, Kristin Koochi, Michelle (Banks) McCormick, Sara Nehf, Melody Nua, Leiana Oswald, Christel (Eves) Stearman, Stephanie Thelen, and Kortney (Reid) Tobler.
"We are excited to welcome back some of our Rebel alumnae for the match Saturday," noted Fredrick. "Our alumnae are an important part of UNLV volleyball and we want to bring our past and present together as often as possible. We are looking forward to a fun evening of volleyball and Rebel stories!"
