Aug. 16, 2011
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team was picked to finish seventh this season in the 2011 Mountain West Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's eight head coaches. The Rebels received 20 points to finish six spots behind Colorado State's 60 points and five first-place votes.
The Rebels, who are coming off a disappointing 10-20 showing last season, look to rebound with the help of a new coaching staff led by Cindy Fredrick, six letterwinners and a crop of newcomers. Amanda Alles is the only senior on the 16-member squad, but will be joined by returning starters Candice Thomas, Madeline Westman and Sekola Falemaka.
The coaches' votes led to three teams being separated by only nine points with CSU atop the list, but followed closely by New Mexico and San Diego State. The Lobos garnered three first-place votes and 56 points for second place, while the Aztecs got 51 points for third.
TCU was tabbed fourth with 41 points, while Wyoming and Boise State were fifth and sixth with 27 and 25 points, respectively. UNLV checked in at seventh and Air Force rounded out the eight-team league with eight points.
UNLV kicks off the 2011 campaign on the road (Aug. 26-27) in Greeley, Colo., at the Hampton Inn & Suites Classic hosted by Northern Colorado. The Rebels will square off with Colorado at 11:00 am on the 26th before facing Northern Colorado that evening at 6:00 pm. UNLV will close out the three-match, two-day tournament with a match against UC Davis at noon on the 27th.
