Gray Knocks Off Scarlet In Scrimmage

2012 Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage Final Stats

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV volleyball program held its Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage on Saturday evening at the Cox Pavilion with the Gray squad coming out on top with the 3-1 victory. The Gray won the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-16 in front of an estimated 256 people.

The Gray team outhit its counterparts by a .318 to .208 discrepancy, and threw down 16 more kills (61-45) in only nine more swings (129-120). Both teams committed 20 errors in the match. The winning side hit above .200 in all four sets and topped out at .500 in the opening stanza. The Scarlet, on the other hand, had its best outing in the third - a set they won - with a .312 effort.

Madeline Westman led a quartet of attackers on the Gray side to notch 10 or more kills with her team-high 16 backed by a .444 hitting clip. Westman also chipped in seven assisted blocks, three digs, one assist and one ace.

Aside from her eight digs, five aces and four assists, Daryn Glenn trailed Westman's attacking out by by one with 15 kills of her own.

Katlin Winters and Sekola Falemaka rounded out the Gray foursome in double-digit kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Winters was also a force at the net with her eight total blocks (three solo), while Falemaka had eight digs and three assists.

The Gray's offense was run through setter Kinsey Caldwell, who dished out a match-high 39 assists. Caldwell also had eight digs, four assisted blocks and four kills off .571 hitting in the win.

The Scarlet received a double-double from Stephanie Thelen, as she combined 33 assists with 14 digs for the feat.



Candice Thomas and Bree Hammel led the Scarlet in kills with 17 and 14, respectively. Thomas pitched in six total blocks (three solo), two assists and one dig, while Hammel added six digs, two solo blocks and an assist.

The Rebels kick off the 2012 campaign with its own UNLV Invitational on Aug. 24-25 at the Cox Pavilion. UNLV welcomes CSU Bakersfield, The Citadel and Northern Arizona to Las Vegas for the two-day affair. The Citadel and NAU open up Friday's action with a 5:00 pm match, which will be followed by UNLV-CSU Bakersfield at 7:00 pm.
