Rebels Serve It Up In Gator Land

First Serve: The 2009 volleyball season begins this weekend, Aug. 28-29, with the UNLV Rebels heading cross country to Gainesville, Fla., for the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational. The Rebels will be joined by the Colorado Buffaloes, Valparaiso Crusaders and the host Florida Gators.
UNLV will open up the season Friday, Aug. 28 (7:00 pm ET/4:00 pm PT) against Florida, who enters 2009 ranked #8 overall in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Rebels will then face Valparaiso on Saturday, Aug. 29 (5:00 pm ET/2:00 pm PT). UNLV and Colorado will not face each other in the four-team affair.

About #8 Florida: The Gators closed out the 2008 season with a #10 national ranking and a 27-4 overall record. Florida went 18-2 to win its 18th consecutive Southeastern Conference crown en route to a trip to the NCAA Tournament's Regional Semifinals. The Gators welcome back 11 letterwinners, which includes five starters. The Gators own a 2-0 edge in head-to-head matches with UNLV. Florida won both by identical 3-0 tallies. The most recent came in 2008 on Nov. 29, which was UNLV's final match of the season.
About Valparaiso: The Crusaders went 25-7 last year and finished second in the Horizon League with a 12-4 record. Valparaiso return 10 letterwinners from 2008, four of which are starters. This will be the first meeting between Valparaiso and UNLV.
On The Sidelines: After opening the 2009 campaign on the road, the Rebels will return to Las Vegas for back-to-back home tournaments. UNLV will host the Alexis Park Classic on Sept. 4-5 and the Alexis Park Invitational on Sept. 10-12.
The Alexis Park Classic will feature the #9 UCLA Bruins, Loyola Marymount Lions and Idaho Vandals. LMU and Idaho will serve up the tournament on Friday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 pm prior to the UNLV-UCLA contest at 7:00 pm. Saturday will feature four matches with UNLV playing Idaho at 12:30 pm and LMU at 7:00 pm.
The Alexis Park Invitational is a three-team tournament that will see the Oregon State Beavers and UC Santa Barbara Gauchos make their way to southern Nevada. The teams will only play two matches over a three-day period. UNLV will face UCSB on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 pm and OSU on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 pm. UCSB and OSU will be the only match on Friday, Sept. 9 at 6:00 pm.
Rebels On The Small Screen: UNLV will make three televised appearances during the 2009 season. The Rebels will have games broadcast on The Mtn. - The MountainWest Sports Network and CBS College Sports Network.
The Rebels will appear on The Mtn. twice. UNLV's Thursday, Oct. 1 (6:30 pm) match with the #17 Utah Utes will be the first appearance, while a road contest on Thursday, Oct. 29 (7:00 pm MT/6:00 pm PT) against the BYU Cougars is second.
UNLV's third and final televised match will be shown via tape delay. The home affair with TCU on Saturday, Nov. 14 (1:00 pm) will be re-aired on Tuesday, Nov. 17 (4:00 pm) on CBS C.
