Thelen Treated To Weekly Honor|
Sept. 30, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV's Stephanie Thelen has earned Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week recognition for the time frame of Sept. 23-29, 2013. This is the second occasion in her career that the Atlanta, Ga., native has been tabbed for the weekly honors.
Thelen, a senior setter, helped the Rebels to a perfect 2-0 mark last week with a 3-1 road win at Southern Utah followed by a 3-0 sweep at home of in-state rival Nevada, Reno. She combined to tally 80 assists (11.43 apg), 16 digs (2.29 dps), three aces, eight kills and five total blocks with a .500 hitting efficiency over the two matches.
"Stephanie has been playing well all season after she returned to the setter position," said Rebel volleyball coach Cindy Fredrick. "She has worked on her all-around game; improving her defense and serving while also being an offensive threat in the front row. This is a well deserved honor as Stephanie has been a tremendous team player throughout her years a Rebel."
At SUU, she notched her first double-double of the season with a combination of 52 assists and 12 digs. She added three blocks and two kills in the team's final non-conference contest of the regular season.
In the bout with UNR, she dished out 28 assists to go along with four digs, three aces and six kills. Her .667 hitting percentage (6k-0e-9ta) and three aces were career highs.
Coincidentally, the first time Thelen was named the conference's player of the week was nearly two years to the day - Sept. 26, 2011 - after helping the Scarlet & Gray to wins over UNR and San Diego State.
The Rebels return to action with two home matches this week against San Jose State and Fresno State on Oct. 3 and 5, respectively. Both contests are set for 7:00 pm first serves at the Cox Pavilion.
